Plant Lists for Cedar Point Biological Station

The Cedar Point Vascular Plant Species List was compiled by Robert B. Kaul, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and his students. Most of the plants are documented in Cedar Point Biological Station Herbarium (see that list).

The Arapaho Prairie Vascular Plant Species List was compiled by Robert Kaul and Steven Rolfsmeier in 1998.

It differs from Keeler et al. 1980 (Keeler, K.H., A.T. Harrison, and L. S. Vescio. 1980. The flora and sandhills prairie communities of Arapaho Prairie, Arthur County, Nebraska. Prairie Naturalist. 12: 65-78). The differences in the two lists reflect in part better taxonomy, revised identifications (Poa interior was almost certainly never there) and some vegetation shift over time.

Herbarium

his is a list of all the specimens in the Herbarium at the Cedar Point Biological Station. The list was compiled by Robert B. Kaul, U. Nebraska-Lincoln and most recently updated in 2004. Cedar Point opened in 1976: the herbarium has been active since that time.

In 2006-7 K.H. Keeler edited the plant lists from Arapaho Prairie and Cedar Point Biological station to reflect more current nomenclature. Plant taxonomy and systematics are undergoing rapid revision. At the same time, the Internet is providing wonderful but continually updated online references. The names on these lists were modified to conform to modern definitions using, chiefly, the USDA Plants database (USDA, NRCS. 2006. The PLANTS Database (http://plants.usda.gov, 13 October 2006). National Plant Data Center, Baton Rouge, LA 70874-4490 USA.) The USDA Plants data base, however, uses Cronquist ( Cronquist, A. 1981. An integrated system of classification of flowering plants. The New York Botanical Garden. Columbia University Press, New York) for its classification, an old scheme. At the same time, they are updating generic names to much more recent decisions, particularly those in the Flora of North America (REF). Consequently, the updating was done with a mixed approached as well, using the Angiosperm Phylogeny Website (Stevens, P. F. (2001 onwards). Angiosperm Phylogeny Website. Version 7, May 2006 [and more or less continuously updated since] http://www.mobot.org/MOBOT/research/APweb/) for systematics at the family level and above, and the PLANTS Database for genera and species names.

Common Names are according to the USDA Plants database (USDA, NRCS. 2006. The PLANTS Database (http://plants.usda.gov, 13 October 2006). National Plant Data Center, Baton Rouge, LA 70874-4490 USA.) Those from Kaul, Sutherland and Rolfsmeier (2006. The Flora of Nebraska) http://www.unl.edu/museum/research/botany/botany.html are also provided.
